Ho Sun Hing Printers in Vancouver’s Chinatown was Canada’s first and oldest Chinese print shop. It closed in 2014, after 106 years in business. The company, originally the Ho Sun Hing Rubber Stamp Shop, was started by Lam Lat Tong in 1908, after leaving his job as a railway cook. The business remained in the family for generations.
During a trip out to Vancouver in August 2012, I went to find the shop, still operating at the time. I had heard that the family was planning on selling the historic building, as the owner Hilda Lam was planning to retire. At that time, they had already begun selling off equipment and various ephemera. The family was kind enough to let me take some photos in the shop.
